Research areas of bime include development and operation of production plants, structural mechanics and process oriented technology design. Research activities within the range of structural mechanics concentrate on fundamental mechanical design of production plants. An example is the investigation of the influence of warping caused by torsion on the structural behaviour of homogenous and multi-laminated general load-bearing characteristics. Furthermore, studying the breaking behaviour of samples and construction units gives an understanding of breaking procedures, allowing the design of high-risk constructions.
The research area production plants deals with the constructive and functional development of cutting and forming machine tools and their modules and/or components. With the focus on their fundamental mechanical design and control engineering, special attention is given to machines and plants for high speed processes. High accuracy and/ or high productivity are objectives which are followed in this field.
